Keep the slime from our shore!

Well the New Year has got off to a positive start already, with my first bit of work for Markosia. I've been swapping emails with writer Martin Hayes for a while now, and we've got one or two ideas for possible collaborations, then he approached me to contribute a pin-up for a graphic novel he's got coming out next month called 'Project Luna: 1947'. He asked if I could model it on one of those vintage propaganda posters - specifically this one:

So the top image is what I came up with. The alien was designed by the GN's artist Jim Boswell, I just tried to make him look more disgusting (as is my wont). Really enjoyed this one, the most fun I've had on a piece for a while.

Judge Dredd - American Vampire

Haven't drawn Dredd for ages and this idea popped into my head the other day. The tagline works better pre-Day of Chaos mind.

Kid Tiger roughs

Quick roughs for a sketch of the teen vigilante, Kid Tiger. James Corcoran - who is currently drawing the strip - very kindly let me have a copy of The Long Tomorrow by Moebius as well as Prisoner of The Stars by Alfonso Font. This (once it's inked) is a little thank you for that generosity.

New 'El Bigote' preview

Currently inking up this bad boy, roughs again provided by El Chivo. This is a tiny detail of a hugely intricate cover/pin-up to promote the next adventure of the undead quillslinger - 'La Noches de los Muertoads'. Just for a challenge/spot of masochism, I'm inking this digitally in Photoshop. Which is taking an age, but if it was too easy it wouldn't be any fun would it?

Groucho in space!

A recent commission - the brief was the 3 words in the title of this post, the rest was left up to me! The result is a blend of certain influences I've been absorbing lately: Plague of Frogs-arc BPRD, John Carter, Moebius and The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Colour-wise I wanted to try something slightly different, at least in terms of the palette used, hence the hazy pinkish cast which is supposed to evoke the strange light on an alien world.

Kid Tiger pin-up (colours)

Pages 3 and 4 of Kid Tiger are imminent, currently being finished off by the rather excellent James Corcoran. When they wing their way to me, I'll be adding colour again. In the meantime, here's a superbly drawn pin-up drawn by James and coloured by me.

El Bigote - One Sore Loser

After my stint inking and colouring the cover for 'El Bigote - A Tequila-drenched Reckoning', Matt McLaughlin (writer and creator of the strip) invited me to contribute a pin-up of the character for a future issue. This is what I came up with - the undead quill-slinger kicking back in his favourite local hellhole, enjoying a relaxing game of poker with some poor schmuck who's clearly bitten off more than he could chew (and who looks very familiar come to think of it). The woman behind the man is the mysterious and deadly Rita Moreno - more of her coming soon in the comic too.

Jikan pin-up art

Pin-up for the next collected edition of Jikan from PARAGON. Enjoyed this hugely.

Durham Red returns...

...Well, to my blog at least. Drew this a couple of months back, and was going to make some more changes but then my laptop bust (I'm still without a computer, but working on it). So because it's been too long since I posted anything, I thought 'what the hell', and here it is. It was inspired by a Durham pin-up drawn by that erstwhile gentleman and scholar Kev Levell.

Just Hellboy beating the tar out of some over-sized worms. Thanks to Jim Campbell for the SFX.

Man With The White Eyes

So as you may be aware, I have an 'illustrator' page on Facebook, and when I noticed that the number of 'likes' was approaching 300 the other week, I decided to do a free sketch for whoever became the lucky 300th. I threw it open to them - what would they like me to draw? The answer, from a very nice Polish lady, was a picture of 'Zly', or the 'Man with the white eyes' (its english language title) - a polish postwar novel that features a sort of Zorro-type outlaw guy. I confess to not having read the book at all, and it's a pretty obscure request I know, but this is what I came up with. As I say, absolutely no idea how accurate this depiction is, but I thought the noir-ish route was a safe enough bet!

Ro-Jaws ruins Christmas

Completed last month for the 2000AD fan forum advent calendar, old favourite Ro-Jaws looms out of a darkened alley with a special delivery. This accompanied a 'choose you own adventure' style story written by Derrick Domican (AKA Dirk Van Dom). Check out his blog here
