End of the line, creep!

This is based on an excellent photo of one of the judges who policed this year's British International Comics Show. It was posted on the facebook page for the Minty fanfilm (which looks to be absolutely stunning, and will hopefully feature my new mate Banners as 'The Perp'). I asked them if I could use it as the basis for an illustration, and they obliged!

Hope to do more with it - this is a colour rough.

  1. That's great, has a bit of a 'Jock' feel about it maybe it could use a hint of detail on the face or the iconic flash across the eyes, but really nice image.

  2. Thanks James, for one of my pieces to evoke the spirit of Jock is the highest accolade indeed!!

I was thinking that the complete lack of facial detail and visor flash added to the way Dredd is competely dehumanised in this, which I quite liked.

  3. If you look at the examples I dug out Jock (the master at this kind of thing) does often obscure a lot of Dredd's face (although the finished product often shows more than the prelims). I think from the angle of this picture you'd not see any face but you might get a flash of visor (matron).

  4. Yeah Emps, I checked em out (have of course stared at em for hours at a time over the years, but took a fresh look at your recommendation). I'm going to play with this a bit more, and experiment with a suggestion of visor flash. Thanks - as ever - for your input guys.

  5. With this in mind it is worth checking out "Class of '79" as a couple of times Greg Staples does a nearly full silhouette of Dredd - once he picks out the helmet badge and in the other he does the visor. What might work is something like the visor just have a line across for the bottom of the visor and bump it up a little so it is off-black (like a very dark shade of blue). It might not work given the position of the top edge of the gun and I think it is fine without it.

  6. I fished out the original. I'm not sure what tricks of perspetive you used but you've managed to inject about 68% more looming into it. Turning it slightly clockwise was a nice move too.

It is a great example of using photo-references but then drawing out some hidden essence, which is not something you can say about a lot of work based on photos. Good stuff.

  7. Thank you sir. The tricks involved were 99% luck, 1% skill, but that's between you and me!

  8. I like this a lot. The atmosphere you've given it is excellent. (Although I'd leave out the visor flash if it were me - more menace)
